Losing Manufacturing Has Social Consequences

Over at the Manufacturing Crunch site, Bill Waddell, a global lean production consultant, has written an article on the social consequences of losing over ten million manufacturing jobs in the US over the past few decades. He suggests that this has closed doors to the less well off social groups, because manufacturing industry had allowed people a stepping stone to the middle class. It's a really interesting read. It's called 'The Unintended Racism Of Unfair Trade.'
